160 Vintage Sheet Squares

I was in need of some good friend time tonight, so Jane came over, and as we chatted, I worked on cutting up my vintage sheets that I’ve been collecting.  These are just the ones from the Vintage Sheet Swap.  It’s160 squares – 4.5 inches each. I’m hoping to eventually have 460 squares, but I have a ways to go.

I think I’m going to do something really simple – just plain squares. I have some different shades of solid yellow sheets or white that I might mix in, but first I want to get the patterned squares cut out.

Just so I can keep record, these are some of the quilts I’m using as inspiration.

T-shirt Quilt Fixings

I’m jumping ahead of myself here since I’ve got two other projects I’m currently working on and this one won’t be until August, but…

My friend and I are taking a t-shirt quilt class later this Summer, and I’ve been setting aside some of my favorite VW Bus shirts for it.  I’m trying to decide what fabrics to choose for the back and border around the shirts.

Any suggestions? I think I’d like to stay with a blue color scheme, like my bus. The batik-y looking print under the shirts is my current thought on backing – kind of like tie-dye. And I also have a bunch of Heather Ross’ pink and blue bus fabric, but that just doesn’t seem to match the shirt colors as well.

Also, have you made a t-shirt quilt before? I’d love to see your design.

Cowpoke Quilt

Thursday night, before I headed off to Texas for my cousin’s wedding, I quickly finished a quilted project that I’ve been working on for a couple months. Most of the reason this quilt has taken so long is that I get frustrated with all the mistakes. I kept repeating my mantra: The baby is just going to throw up on it anyway. Still, it was neat to see them actually use it while I was there.

This is the first quilt that I actually ever finished, but it was sloppy. Next time, I will take Thomas’ mom’s advice and quilt it diagonally rather than with patterns. I tried to do little squares and criscrosses to match the cowboy theme and to disguise my corners that weren’t matched up too well. I also totally cheated on the border and made up the sewing technique as I went along. Next time I will be sure to use thread that will blend in more and learn an actual stitch technique for binding.

Other than that, I posted a couple photos from Thomas’ birthday last Saturday. After the wedding, my family took him out for surprise dessert and gave him a gag gift of a doo-rag for his new motorcycle, and a portable picnic kit made from the leftover plastic dishes from the rehersal dinner the night before.
