It’s for the journey, not the destination…

In high school, Dallas’ dream was to be a documentary filmmaker. Though she traveled down a different path, Dallas’ passion for documenting and sharing information has stayed with her. This blog allows her to express that passion while exploring her interests in travel, nature, crafting and photography. Dallas currently resides in Brussels, Belgium with her husband Thomas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this blog called For the Journey?

This theme, it’s for the journey, not the destination, is my husband’s and my life motto.  I first discovered this theme with a hobby/sport we did, called Geocaching.  Geocaching is a treasure hunt using GPS coordinates.  We quickly realized that the cheap prizes we found were not the treasure, but the adventure we took to get there was.  Over time, I’ve recognized this theme in many places throughout our lives – if you just look for the endpoint, you’re going to miss a lot along the way.

Why are you in Belgium?

In January, 2009, my husband and I moved from Atlanta, Georgia, to Belgium with his job.  We thought living overseas would be a great opportunity to learn more about the world and ourselves.  We downsized our belongings, sold our cars, and headed across the pond.  So far, we have had a great time traveling all around, meeting new friends, and learning what it means to be Bruxellois (one who lives in Brussels).

Are you the same person who blogged at sallad.net?

Yes.  I blogged at sallad.net for a few years.  I had been wanting to move my blog to a site with a catchier name, (Sallad was a childhood nickname), and announcing that we were moving to Belgium provided the perfect opportunity.  This blog started in October 2008, but I have since exported many of my old entries from sallad.net over to it.  You can see my original post on this site here: Welcome, Bienvenu, Welkom.

What kind of camera, photo-editing software, and sewing machine do you use?

My main camera is a Nikon D50 DSLR. I also carry a point and shoot Panasonic Lumix FS3 when I don’t want to lug around something so big. I do most of my photo editing with Adobe Lightroom and post my photos on Flickr (see the Photo Gallery tab at the top of the page). My sewing machine is a Pfaff Creative 2140 that has way more features than I know how to use.

What do you do for a living?

I am currently not working, but before moving to Belgium, I was an Instructional Designer and designed online training for a corporation.  My background is in journalism, web and multimedia development, video production, and adult learning.  In the past, and for now, I have stuck to a policy of keeping my work-life out of my blog.  If you have more questions though about what I do, or did, just send me an email.

I’m thinking of moving to Belgium.  Do you have any tips?

Yes!  I love talking about this topic.  The best thing would probably be to just email me some specific questions, but in the meantime, check out this post I wrote on Expat Groups in Brussels.  Moving overseas is really what you make of it, and finding a group of friends really helped me ease right in.

Can I ask you another question?

Sure. Send me an email.

Enjoyed your photos and info about your travels. What an adventure you are having and seeing many different places and people and things.
Hope the time with family in NC was enjoyable – photos were beautful.
Loved the waterfalls. There is a St Park near Silverton OR where you
can see 10 waterfalls within an 8 mile hike. The only place in the world where so many falls are in such a close area. You will be north of it when you are at Mount Hood, OR. Enjoy the rest of your trip – we fondly remember the Thanksgiving we spent with you in 2006.
