Wow, you guys had some great ideas on meat-free recipes. I will have to try a few and post an update. Thanks!
The weather this past weekend was very un-Belgian and gorgeous. We had bright sunny skies and temperatures around 21C (70F, that’s hot for Brussels!). Thomas and I packed a picnic lunch and headed over to Bois de la Cambre, the large park just a couple blocks away from our apartment.
The park was packed! We live fairly close to a couple Universities, so sunny days always have sunbathing students. There were also lots of families, picnickers, and ball players. My favorite was a guy who danced elaborate modern dances for about 3 hours straight – I wish I had a video camera with me.
We picnicked, soaked up the sun, and then headed home to the shade before we got burned. I was excited to just pull out my sunglasses for once this year. :)
This weekend really felt like Summer. We’ve opened all our windows. The sun has started setting around 10pm. We pulled out our Rummikub set and played a couple after-dinner games. And we tried out our new grill (thanks Sarah!). Have you started your Summer yet?

I have a feeling that the day at the park was cooler than the sunbather’s indicated by their clothing.
Dallas – I know someone here in Brussels who used to have a blog at http://www.vegancowgirl.blogspot.com She doesn’t write on it anymore because she had a baby but her old posts are filled with good vegan ideas and she has links to other veg blogs. The cool thing is that her ingredients were gathered from the markets where we all shop. She also referenced restaurants and Bio stores. Have fun! We try to eat less meat too, mostly because it tastes so horrible here.
@Julie: Wow. All the meat I’ve had here has been incredible, though I will admit I have not yet tried the horse meat. For me vegetarianism is simply a resistance to taking part in the killing of sentient beings, and a wish to reduce my negative impact on the earth.
@Lynn: It’s amazing how quickly your body will adapt to new benchmarks for what “warm” is. It probably wasn’t anymore than 80′F, but even I was feeling quite warm in the sun.
