Before I moved from the US, I collected a bunch of vintage sheets – yellows for a different quilt and blues and greens. Last year, I made half of the blocks for the Candy Bar Road quilt with the blue/greens, but got bored of my fabrics and set it aside. Yesterday, I pulled it out again, feeling inspired to *just* finish it, and saw that I had enough blocks done if I reduced it down to a baby quilt. It’s no longer the Candy Bar Road pattern, but it’s a lot closer to being off my Work in Progress list.
Now I need some help… It currently measures to 36 x 36 inches, but I would really love to add a border to get it up to atleast 40 by 40 inches. I have these 6 fabrics I haven’t used yet, or I could repeat one of the solids – blue, green, or purple – since it’s already pretty busy. I’m thinking of the bottom left fabric as the backing with the green or blue solid as the binding.
So what do you think? Which of the fabrics do you think would look best for the border, backing, and binding?

My vote is for the one in the bottom row in the middle.

All the prints are too big scaled for the project. You are enlargering it only by two inches on every side. The green print would work fine as closing the busy prints. It has small scale pattern that has feeling of solid color but the colour shade might be wrong. In a way I would say blue turqois color as the 3rd square on left hand side or the flower boardprint and then end vid a binding that is a tad darker.all the other fabrics works fine as backing.
Okay, I absolutely love this! What I would do is take the fabric you’re thinking of using and then just lay it under the edge so you can get a better idea of what it’s going to look like surrounding the blocks. I really like that green print, but it might be better as a backing fabric than a border. I agree with Kristina about using a darker color for the binding.

great work, dallas. i’m not sure any of the prints except for the yellow/green geometric print would work for a border, though i agree that i would lay them out like a border and step back and look. you’ll be able to tell much more that way. as for the binding, a dark purple or turquoise would frame this so nicely. i can’t wait to see it finished.
Of the choices I would say top middle (mostly white with flowers). The midddle of the quilt is quite busy, so a nice clean border would frame it nicely.
Lookin good Dallas. Without seeing it in person my two cents worth are:
Border: one of the “bouqet” fabrics (top row middle, or one of the outer fabrics on the bottom row)
Binding: Lime green for some Zip!
Backing: blue flowers with circles (top left).
PS- up for another sewing par-tay soon?

I would do either the green or the top left. Let us know…I’m anxious to find out what you decide.
Cute! I have no advice, though. Sorry.

I think any of them would work fine! I guess I like the top left the best. :) Yay for one more project off the to-do list!
I think the middle of the top row would be the best border and give the eye a place to rest. I actually like the top left best for the backing.
[...] I finally finished my blue/green vintage sheet quilt (quilt #3). Thanks for all the feedback on the border, but I decided to just skip it and add the binding. For the back, I pieced a row of the three [...]
