Do you ever get those creepy random strangers marking your personal Flickr photos as Favorites? I love the community on Flickr, but sometimes I just want to feel like my photos aren’t quite so easily stumbled upon, so I’m giving Picasa Web a try. Note: The peppermint photos don’t have anything to do with the post, I just thought it needed some eye-candy. :)
So, I am torn – there are pros and cons to both photo-hosting sites.
- Picasa Web shows a larger photo on default.
- Flickr has multiple options for download size.
- Picasa Web allows navigation between photos with the keyboard.
- Flickr has strong communities and groups.
- Picasa Web has a very easy interface for geo-tagging locations.
- Flickr allows privacy settings on individual photos, rather than a whole set.
- Picasa Web is less popular and feels a little more private.
I’m finding Picasa Web a lot more pleasant to use on the back-end than Flickr – I’m even captioning, tagging people, and marking geo-tags. But because of the groups, Flickr is the preferred site for crafters. For now, I’m using Flickr for my craft photos, and Picasa Web for everything else. But if I want to search out other photographers’ work, like if I’m going on a trip and want some inspiration, I will still go to Flickr. What do you use for photo-hosting?

Um…Snapfish? But that’s cause I’m not a big photo sharer.

So, my big photo challenge is now that I have a Mac, I use iPhoto, and I’d love to geotag and facetag my photos resident on my computer in the same way as I do on Picasa. does anyone know is this possible?
And of course, I now want a phone with a built in GPS so it does this all automatically.

It’s an interesting question – I’ve just discovered picasaweb and I like the ease of it. But you can’t upload many photos before you reach your limit and have to pay.
I’m torn between paying for flickr or picasaweb – with the benefits that you have listed – or just hosting Gallery on my own server. The latter is free but no one will know that my photos are there!

I have always used flickr…but I’ve kind of stopped using it. A few months ago I took a lot of photos off, and am struggling with what to put on there and what to take away in regards to showing my work. I guess it’s really all just a matter of personal preference. I agree, the groups on flickr are great, and inspiration too…but I find myself less wanting to put things up anymore. It’s frustrating. I guess I need to look into other places too.

Becca – I love the geotagging feature on my new phone (Nexus One). I’ve also got an application that records my tracks so I can see where I’ve been and geotag accurately by matching up times.
Clare – When I first started my blog a few years ago, I hosted my own gallery, but decided that I didn’t want to mess with the maintenance and updates. As for the cost, I post so many photos anyway that no matter where I go, I’ll need to pay for it. :( At least neither is that expensive..
Jane – For your awesome artwork, you might want to look into DeviantArt.com. They seem to lean a lot toward digital art and graphics like you do.
I have never heard of Picasa Web. I know what you mean about the people you don’t know on Flickr. I am so computer dumb and camera dumb that Flickr is all I use. I did get a new camera for Christmas. I am so excited about it.

Amy – Picasa Web is owned by Google, like Flickr is owned by Yahoo. It’s nice in that it interfaces really well with the free Picasa photo editing software, but it is not as popular as Flickr. What kind of camera did you get?
When I open my Flickr mail it is mostly people that just favorite. If someone leaves a comment I will actually go and visit their site.
It wasn’t always that way, but imitation is a form of flattery I guess…and really maybe a comment is just some ego stroking.
I’m too set in my ways to change now and I do LOVE Flickr.

Such a constant issue, isn’t it? Maintaining an online presence? I’ve had such a problem finding a service that I liked. Personally I’ve been using phpGallery for years now and been fairly happy with the results but they’re far from ideal and community-wise, it’s a black hole.
My concern with the bigger sites, however, has been ownership &/or privacy. Intellectual property (in this case, photos) is still in a bit of legal limbo these days in regards to the Internet and with sites able to update terms and conditions on a whim, I guess I have been in some level of fear as to my photo’s future use.
Didja see where Facebook had a couple incidents this year- one where they changed the terms to say they non-exclusively owned your uploaded photos in perpetuity and then another where they were using user’s photos in the singles “Hey, wanna chat with me 2-nite?!?” ads appearing on the sides of the site?
Shady stuff out there.
