We’re going home! Not home home, permanently, but just for a couple of weeks. It’s my first trip back to the US since we moved about a year ago.
So far, we’ve packed:
- 3 cartons of Speculoos spread
- 8 bottles of St. Bernardus Abt 12 beer
- 20 Liege waffles
- and 8 lbs of Neuhaus chocolate
I hope we have room for some clothes in our suitcases too. :) We’ll be spending a week in Black Mountain, NC, a week in Mt. Hood, Oregon, and a week in Mountain View, California. We’ll also be passing through Atlanta and Raleigh with just enough time to visit our friends, family and favorite stores.
As we’re making our whirlwind tour, do you have any recommendations on things to see or do in those areas, or even more importantly…fabric shops to be sure not to miss? :)
I think we’ll have Internet throughout our trip, but in case we don’t, have a Happy Thanksgiving!

ok- i have emailed my friend who has the place in black mountain about the fabric stores.
We can always come out and visit you there if you cant make it out here. if you do come here- there is a quilt place in town. (although shes not open a lot)
Fabulous! I live in Mountain View, CA! While Mountain View itself no longer has a fabric shop I would recommend (it moved!), you might try The Bobbins Nest in Santa Clara, just down the road. Collection of cool fabrics, yarn, knitting/crochet stuff, and embroidery. Very fun stuff in there, and done up really well. There are definitely other yarn shops, but I don’t know much about yarn, so I don’t know what’s good. I shop a lot at Eddie’s Quilting Bee in Sunnyvale (it’s closest to me), but there is also The Granary in Sunnyvale, and The Prairie Queen in, um, I think that’s actually San Jose (southerly, toward Los Gatos). There are other places in the Bay Area fun to go to as well, if you want to drive around. Exclusive Buttons in El Cerrito (north of Berkeley) has all vintage buttons, including some fancier ones in Bakelite and crystal. Urban Burp in San Francisco is vintage fabrics, but mostly vintage barkcloth (great shop and the owner is super friendly). Satin Moon (that’s in the Richmond district, I think) has some great stuff of all types as well (quilting, home dec, clothing), but is a bit harder to get too. And there is always Britex down on Union Square. Those would be my highlights, but if you have a specific interest in mind, let me know and I’ll try to point you in the right direction!
I think Mt. Hood is not too far from Portland (if my memory serves me correctly). If you’re near Portland you have to go to Bolt. They have tons of great fabrics, including an impressive selection of Liberty fabrics.
Keep me posted, we would love to meet you halfway…

For the love of your luggage be sure to pad the beer extra!
Seriously, our trip last April resulted in broken glass and clothing reeking of Rodenbach when we unpacked. It was a mess.
And hey!! Enjoy your trip!!

Have a nice time back in the States. By the way I love speculoos spread…it’s on my list to bring back as well! I’ll prob have to bring some waffles and chocolates too…unfortunately our space is limited now that we’re traveling with a baby and can’t afford to bring back beer and have it break…we’ve brought plenty back in the past though.
Have a great trip and we’ll see you possibly in Dec, if not, in mid January.
Thanks for the St Niklaas treats…they were yummy!

Hope you have a safe and fun trip home. You should go by the new fabric shop in Atlanta – http://whipstitchlounge.blogspot.com/ It opened after my trip to Atlanta last spring, so I haven’t been able to check it out yet.

[...] I didn’t remember to pull out my camera even once while we were there. And remember that 8-lbs of chocolate I carried across the sea? We forgot that at our first stop too. Whoops! Sorry to the folks we visit [...]
