This Summer, I went on fantastic trip – a girl’s overnight to Volendam, Marken Island and Alkamaar in the Netherlands. Reid, her 2-year old daughter, and I drove up there for some touring and girly time without our guys.

Our first stop was Volendam and Marken Island. Volendam is an adorable little tourist town, just across the water from Marken Island. We caught a ferry over to the island and wandered around. Marken is a picturesque fishing village lined with little wooden houses. I loved the fresh seafood stands selling along the water. Delicious!

Since we had a toddler with us, we headed back to our hotel for an early night. We settled into our pajamas, opened a bottle of wine, and watched The Sound of Music (my first time ever). Reid is a big fan and sang along to all of the songs, and teared up when her young daughter got into the movie too.

The next morning, we headed up to Alkamaar where they have the weekly cheese market. Big wheels of cheese are brought in and people in traditional clothing run them around on rockers to be weighed. It was a very touristy show, but the cheese we tasted (gouda) was delicious.

It was a wonderful short trip. If you’re looking for day trips from Amsterdam, I recommend Volendam/Markem, at the least. I’ve posted more photos on Flickr:
