Keukenhof and Delft

A couple weekends ago, I took a tour of Keukenhof and Delft in the Netherlands.  Delft is a small town known for their porcelain.  The trip included a brief tour of the factory where they handpaint the porcelain, and of course a stop at the gift shop, though I didn’t get anything.  We also had time to quickly walk through the town and grab a bite to eat.  It was really cute and felt like a mini-Amsterdam with all the bicycles and canals.

Keukenhof, the main part of the trip, is a gorgeous park with more tulips than I’ve ever seen before.  As you drive up to it, you’re surrounded by fields of tulips in long rows of bright colors. Unfortunately, we visited the garden on a special day with a flower parade and the crowds were awlful – worse than I’ve ever seen at Disney World even.  That, plus the bright sunshine made it difficult to get good photos, but I tried. :)  Here’s some of my favorite shots…

The park is huge, with plenty of places for a picnic or kids to play. There were cafes, a petting zoo, a labyrinth, and even some places to play in the water. If you ever come to visit us in Belgium, I recommend coming at the end of April to see the Keukenhof and the Royal Gardens in the last post. Spring is really beautiful here with everything in bloom.

More photos from this trip are posted online.

Laeken Royal Greenhouses

I’ve got a ton of photos to edit from the past week – Keukenhof, Queensday, Kinderdijk, and Rome from February – but I’m getting tired of my last post on here, so I need to update.

In Belgium, the Royal family opens their greenhouses for two weeks each year for tours (for only 2.50 euros). This happened to be last week, so Reid and I went. The greenhouses and flowers were gorgeous.

There were 11 greenhouses in the tour, each beautifully landscaped and covered with flowers, even hanging from the ceiling. The flower fragrance was wonderful. The architecture was nice too – it felt very delicate and ornate.

These were my favorite flowers there – they looked like flowers within flowers.

This is me outside the palace. Unfortunately, we did not get to tour it.

Part of the tour walked us through the back gardens.  They were simple, but very pretty with all the trees in bloom.

I always think this kind of plant is so pretty, and this particular one had such huge flowers on it.

I debated if I should delete this photo since it’s blurry, but actually, I like the effect – it feels breezy to me.

I’m really glad I got to visit this while it was open this year. If you’d like to see more photos, check them out on Flickr:
