Christmas Lizard

The past couple of weeks have been busy, with packing, Christmas, and a family emergency. I am very ready for some down-time. I just wanted to post this quick note to say Happy New Year, and let you know that my next blog entry will be from my new home in Belgium.

Blogging from Starbucks

Hi! I’m sitting in Starbucks blogging on my laptop while Thomas plays with his new Android phone(s). We needed to get out of our house and sit on real chairs since our house is empty…and now officially for rent.

Our House - For Rent

This is our living room now – we’re camping out on a futon in the corner. All of the rooms are empty and we’re living out of 3 suitcases and a plastic crate. With all of the furniture out, we’ve been doing lots of scrubbing — and singing. I love how our house echos when empty. :)

Camping in the Empty Living Room

Today, we ran over to the park and dropped off a couple of new Travelbugs in a geocache. I left a VW Bus TB to travel to all 50 states, and a Darth Maul TB to come find me in Belgium. I also have two that I’ll leave in Belgium – one to travel Europe and one to come back to the states.

Signing the Geocache Log

I’ve started filling in my calendar for events once we’re in Belgium. I’ve registered for the American Women’s Club Welcome to Belgium class, and we’re thinking of going to a geocaching event our first week there. I’ve also found a few other groups that sound interesting – Viewfinders Photography Club and the Belgian Patchwork Quilting Association.

It’s Moving Week!

Thomas reviews the packing list

It’s finally moving week. Yesterday, the movers packed up our house in 5 hours. It’s crazy to see the contents of our house, which we think is big – too big for us even – packed into a tiny little box. We didn’t even take up half of the 20-foot shipping crate. Anyway, those items go by boat and will arrive in Belgium in February.

Boxes ready to go

We also get to ship 500 lbs of items by air. Those will take 2 weeks and will arrive when we do – January 1st. It was interesting to me to see what things we picked out as essentials:

  • 2 Sleeping bags, pillows, shower curtain/hooks/rod, towels
  • Basic kitchen supplies – skillet, a pot, 4 cups, 2 bowls/plates, 2 sets of utensils, a cooking knife and spoon
  • Thomas’ computer, monitor, keyboard and mouse
  • Sewing machine, tub of WIP projects, sewing supplies
  • 2 Bicycles, helmets, and accessories
  • Skype phone and tools

We took up only half of this crate

The most challenging part was that we had to make a list of every item we shipped – including date we bought it and price to replace it in Belgium. That took a few hours, but it was really eye-opening. Seeing the cost to replace my wardrobe makes me wonder why I have so many clothes. Or why do we have 7 new toothbrushes, 31 pieces of tupperware, and over a thousand CDs. I really think moving is going to be a big lesson in simplicity.

My New Moo Cards

My New Moo Cards

My New Moo Business Cards

Finally, my new Moo Cards arrived. I ordered these about a month and a half ago, but there was a printer error delay. Anyway, I’ve got them now and I think they look great.

The cards have 10 of my favorite photos printed on the fronts, and the back has my email address and website. I was inspired to make these by my blog friends, Leah and Mark. They hand them out when they meet new friends – like when I finally met them in person at a party this last weekend. These will be great to give new friends in Belgium when I want to share my email or web address.

Despite the delay in receiving the cards, I do recommend Moo. It connects directly to your Flickr account and you can easily pick out a variety of photos to be made into business cards. If you’re looking for a way to share your photos on nice quality cards, these turned out really well…and the price was very reasonable.

Sorry there haven’t been many posts recently. We’ve just been trying to get everything packed and see some of our friends before we go. I have a handful of photos still to post, but I really don’t think I’ll get to those until Christmas week.
