I’m jumping ahead of myself here since I’ve got two other projects I’m currently working on and this one won’t be until August, but…
My friend and I are taking a t-shirt quilt class later this Summer, and I’ve been setting aside some of my favorite VW Bus shirts for it. I’m trying to decide what fabrics to choose for the back and border around the shirts.
Any suggestions? I think I’d like to stay with a blue color scheme, like my bus. The batik-y looking print under the shirts is my current thought on backing – kind of like tie-dye. And I also have a bunch of Heather Ross’ pink and blue bus fabric, but that just doesn’t seem to match the shirt colors as well.
Also, have you made a t-shirt quilt before? I’d love to see your design.

I’ve never made a quilt in my life, but a friend of mine commissioned an Amish woman to make him a quilt out of his college fraternity t-shirts. It’s very cool. I’ll see if he’s got it out of storage, and if he does I’ll snap a photo for you…

Yes I have, and I”m in the middle of making another…they’re hard to get the sizes right…but fun in the end.
I made one, for a friend who was relocating, but the thing was jinxed and a struggle the entire way. Many months and whiny blog posts later, its done and the recipient adores it. I found that the sashing and borders really needed to be a solid. And then I did a fun, silly print for the back.

I made a t-shirt quilt a few years ago out of race t-shirts. I know *nothing* about sewing, but I used some instructions I found on the internet. Took them to the fabric store and found a wonderful salesperson who helped me get everything I needed. I did it while I was home for the holidays so that I could use my mom’s sewing machine. It turned out great — and that’s me, again, with no sewing experience. You know what you’re doing, so it should turn out great. :)
The one thing I’ve never done is actually “quilt” it, since I didn’t want stitching going through all the shirts.

fun! I made a t-shirt quilt about 8 years ago, but I totally botched it, so it’s been sitting folded up in my basement forever. One day I will get around to remaking it.
