Balding Cardinal

This little guy keeps coming back to one of our front feeders. I don’t know if he’s sick and that’s why he’s losing his head feathers, or if he’s just molting. He’s the only cardinal I’ve ever seen do this.

Unidentified Garden Objects

Anyone know what these are?

The pink flowers are randomly growing out by our creek. They’re on a a very tall stem with no other flowers around them. The whole group of them is about the size of my fist.

Edit: I think Natalie is right and this is a Dianthus, Sweet William – the tall variety. I wonder how this single bunch got to the middle of my backyard?

Weed or Not?

The plant is growing in my flower bed where my parents planted a bunch of Hostas and Solomon’s seal. I’m not sure if this is something they planted, or a weed that found it’s way over. It’s almost knee high.

Edit: Mom confirmed on Flickr that this a weed, so it’s going to get weeded. I really liked the leaves on it, but it looks a little gangly.

Pirates vs. Ninjas Party

Ninja Thomas

The party was a success…lots of friends, lots of drinks, and lots of fun. Thomas dressed as a Ninja (photo above) and I was a Pirate. Most of the photos turned out like this – blurry – but it’s probably an accurate view of what the guests saw.

Drunk-eyed view

There are other photos, but I’m warning you that they’re not the best examples of my photography.

We had a few dress up, a few played poker, and a few got a little silly – but we all had a good time. There were Jello Shots, two cakes – caramel and chocolate frosted – and we sang Happy Birthday to Thomas. The party ended early, shortly after midnight, but for the sake of everyone’s livers, it was a good idea. Most of all, I think Thomas had a good time – Happy 30th, Thomas!

TGIF

Thank goodness it’s Friday! How your week going? Mine’s feeling a little crazy. Saturday night, we’re celebrating Thomas’ 30th birthday with a Pirate vs. Ninja party. I’m sure there will photos to follow.

Thomas thinks that 30 is the end of life – you can tell by the motorcycle posts he’s been making in his blog. The last time he did that was right after he proposed. Guess he thought life was about to end then too. :) You’ve got to get your fun in before we get all settled down. Hehe…

And just around the corner, we’re headed to Raleigh for a very dear friend’s wedding – he has been a great friend since high school and was my bridesman. While we’re there, we’re going to get to visit with both of our families – I haven’t seen mine since Christmas.

Thomas’ sister will be throwing a mini-party that weekend too since three of their birthdays fall in the same week. It’s going to be a rushed weekend, but we should have fun. I’ve been doing a little crafting for one of the birthday girls – here’s a little teaser…

Exposaroonie – Rule of Thirds

This week on Exposaroonie, the challenge is Rule of Thirds – basically the idea that a photo can be more interesting if the subject, or focus, is not smack-dab in the middle. I tend to center my bird photography, because I want to fill the frame to get as much detail as possible. Thomas and I headed over to the park this evening to practice Rule of Thirds. I haven’t decided which shot I’m going to submit as my entry this week, but these are my favorites. Which one do you like?

The whole set is posted on Flickr – Rule of Thirds (15 photos)

Hitter

Canada Goose

Thomas and Clover

Muscovey Duck

Father Son Fishing

I’m leaning toward the first one (b&w baseball), and Thomas is rooting for the second one (out of focus goose).
