UUMAN May Day Celebration

After church on Sunday, there was a May Day Celebration with a may pole, fairy wings, and a drum circle. Thomas and I took photos and I love how they turned out – so much laughter and movement in them. The kids were really cute and even the rain didn’t stop them from having a good time. I’ve posted my favorites below, which happen to have all been taken by Thomas, but the entire set is here:

Weekend Update

We have a full weekend schedule and will be posting a few photo albums in the next couple of days – Boating on Lake Windward, Birding at the Monastery, and the UUMAN May Day Party. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peak at the Embroidered Buttons I’m making for a swap. This is really my first embroidery project, so I made sure to keep it simple.

Are We There Yet Mom is holding a photography contest for a book on Macro photography. There is no theme for this month, so I’m submitting this tricolored heron that I saw at Jekyll Island a couple months ago. I had meant to enter it in the Atlanta Audubon Photo Contest, but I missed the deadline.

Also, I made two updates to my blog. In the link bar across the top, you’ll see that the Swap Log is back – this is a list of the craft swaps I’ve participated in. I also added a Yard Log with a catalog of the birds we’ve photographed in our yard. Wow, 26 species! And I know there are a couple more that we just haven’t captured in photos yet.

P.S.  Next week, I’m participating in color week with Curious Bird.  Each day, I will post photos focusing on a particular color.  There isn’t a theme, but I think I’m going to try and focus it on things around our house.

The Wood Thrush

We learned about a new bird, the Wood Thrush, in our birding class this week, and then when while walking around our neighborhood, we heard it. This bird has a beautiful song.

We learned that he’s only here for the Spring, and is often in the tops of the trees. We followed the song to a top of a tree, and there he was, just singing away. We watched him for a while and snapped a few photos.

Happy Earth Day!

Squirrel on the deck

I thought about doing a post today listing out what Thomas and I do to be Green, but as I started to think about it, I realized we really don’t do that much. I mean we recycle bottles and have a few compact florescent light bulbs, but other than that, I love my long hot showers, I drive over an hour every day, and I leave my computer on even when I’m asleep or not home. So, I’m curious what green habits do you have and can share. Any ideas that maybe we can adopt?

Lullwater Conservation Park

Thomas and I are taking a month-long birding class at Emory Center for Lifelong Learning. Wednesday nights, we have classroom instruction and Saturday mornings, we go out into the field. This last week was our first class.

Robin

Wednesday, we learned how to look for field marks on birds, why some binoculars are $20 and others are over $100, and the difference between birdwatchers and birders – I think Thomas and I have become birders. Right now, we’re more interested in collecting species, than just studying birds. Oh well.

Canada Goose Goslings

The Saturday hike was amazing! We went to Lullwater Conversation Park on Emory’s campus and saw 37 different species of birds – a few that were new to our list. We both saw one of the birds that we’ve been pining to see – barred owl for me, and wood duck for Thomas.

Red Tail Hawk

The trip had some excitement too. We watched a goose chase a hawk eating a squirrel, a bunch of crows beat up two owls and knocked one of out of a tree, and later at home, we watched a hawk catch a crow.

Baby Barred Owl

We both took our cameras on the field trip, but Thomas got much better shots – his camera does better in low light. The pictures in this post are mine, but I really suggest checking out his shots too.

Here’s are photos:

P.S. Does the coloring on my photos look off? My monitor keeps flipping from an orange tinge to a dark blue tint. I think I need to recalibrate it, but I’m not sure if it messed up the color correction of my photos too. Thanks!
