Lots of Love

Can you believe that we’re already half-way through February? It’s getting warmer, cherry blossoms are starting to appear, and I feel very loved.

My grandmother sent me this Valentine’s Day card this week. How sweet is that?

And my friend Jane dropped off some Get Well tulips on Sunday. What an awesome friend…  Jane just started her own blog. Be sure to check it out – she’s very crafty.

I posted some more photos of the flowers on Flickr:

I also received a couple of blog awards from Lisa, but I’ve been slacking on passing them on. In the meantime, I just wanted to say thanks Lisa – if you hadn’t given them to me, I’d pass them on to you. :)

Backyard Bird Count Completed

We slept through the bird count Saturday. Sunday morning was overcast and dreary, so we held out waiting for some sun to shine through. Around 3:30, we gave up on the sun and decided to do a quick count as a thunderstorm came rolling in. Luckily we were counting from the dry, warm safety of our living room window. I was surprised that the birds did not mind the rain, especially considering how big a raindrop would be from their perspective.

Anyway, this is what we counted:

  • Mourning Dove – 2
  • Red-bellied Woodpecker – 1
  • Blue Jay – 1
  • Common Raven – 2
  • Carolina Chickadee – 8
  • Tufted Titmouse – 3
  • White-breasted Nuthatch – 3
  • Carolina Wren – 1
  • Northern Mockingbird – 1
  • Eastern Towhee – 4
  • White-throated Sparrow – 3
  • Dark-eyed Junco – 1
  • Northern Cardinal – 4

Thomas took the photo in this post, but he was going to delete it, so I claimed it. This is the first weekend this year that we’ve seen robins in our yard, though none during our count. Thomas says that means Spring is coming. I sure hope he’s right.

Here’s a few more photos from around the yard:

Weekend Update

Thank goodness the bird count is all weekend, because I didn’t count a single bird today.  In fact, I slept almost the entire day.  I’ve got flu.

I haven’t been real sick in a while, but this time it hit me hard – aches, congestion, chills, and I think a little bit of a fever.  Thomas has been taking care of me, and even made me some chicken soup.  Hopefully, I’ll feel better tomorrow and we can count some birds.

The Great Backyard Bird Count

Today is the start of the Great Backyard Bird Count. This event is open to anyone across the country, and it’s easy to participate.  It’s going on through February 18th.

Bluebird on Birdbath

Just pick a spot that you can watch for at least 15 minutes, and record what kind and how many birds you see. This can be your backyard, your bird feeder, or even at a local park. Thomas and I are going to start in our backyard, but I think we might try to join some other birders in a new park later in the day.

Cardinal

After you have IDed your birds, record your results on the website. You can find identification guides and regional checklists online. If you’re in the Georgia area, Thomas has posted some great resources on his site.

Pileated Woodpecker

Sounds pretty easy, huh? If you participate, let me know what you see… I’m sure we’ll have some photos to share later this weekend. The shots in this post were all from our yard this past month.

Happy Valentine's Day
