We slept through the bird count Saturday. Sunday morning was overcast and dreary, so we held out waiting for some sun to shine through. Around 3:30, we gave up on the sun and decided to do a quick count as a thunderstorm came rolling in. Luckily we were counting from the dry, warm safety of our living room window. I was surprised that the birds did not mind the rain, especially considering how big a raindrop would be from their perspective.

Anyway, this is what we counted:

  • Mourning Dove – 2
  • Red-bellied Woodpecker – 1
  • Blue Jay – 1
  • Common Raven – 2
  • Carolina Chickadee – 8
  • Tufted Titmouse – 3
  • White-breasted Nuthatch – 3
  • Carolina Wren – 1
  • Northern Mockingbird – 1
  • Eastern Towhee – 4
  • White-throated Sparrow – 3
  • Dark-eyed Junco – 1
  • Northern Cardinal – 4

Thomas took the photo in this post, but he was going to delete it, so I claimed it. This is the first weekend this year that we’ve seen robins in our yard, though none during our count. Thomas says that means Spring is coming. I sure hope he’s right.

Here’s a few more photos from around the yard:
