He's Back

This morning, I saw the baby deer in the front yard. He must have amazing hearing, because turned and looked at me through the window, as soon as I made the tiniest peep. He quickly ran off, but only to the backyard. I was able to capture a few more shots of him there.

And this cute little guy was in the front yard when I got home today. He was just sitting there munching on a mushroom.

Fun Monday: My Friend Georgy

On Fun Monday this week, Willowtree asked:

Tell us about your best friend. Particularly things like: where you first met, how long you’ve been friends and why you think you are best friends.

I’m going to tell you about my longest friend, Georgy. She’s a wonderful friend that I don’t get to see very often (she lives in Boston), but I know if I need an understanding ear, I can just give her a call or shoot her an email. She was my Matron of Honor in my wedding.

Georgy and I met in high school in Florida – she was part of my geeky group of friends. She introduced me to the Internet and got me signed onto the local Bulletin Board System (BBS), Dragon World, where we would chat online after school. Random note: Thomas was on that same BBS, though I didn’t know him then as anyone other than just another twerpy online geek.

At the end of my Sophomore year, I moved to North Carolina. Most of my friends faded away, but Georgy wrote me snail-mail to keep in touch. Another random note: I noticed when going through the old letters before her wedding a couple years ago that she had mentioned Thomas in one of them…foreshadowing.

Anyway, as the Internet grew, Georgy kept in touch online – first by connecting to my local-NC BBS from Florida, and then through online journals. Another note: It was on her online journal that Thomas finally tracked me down and Georgy convinced us to meet.

So, what’s so cool about Georgy? No, it’s not her amazing ability to quote more music lyrics than anyone I know. It’s because she’s an intelligent, thoughtful, caring person with a great sense of humor, and she’s not afraid to march to the beat of her own drum.

And, she sends me cool notes like this:

Translation:

Hey there!
I’m just writing to say, well, I’m sorry I haven’t been able to be there with you through the wedding planning process like most Maids of Honor get to be. But I’m available for any support you need that I can provide pre-wedding and most definately during. I can’t wait to be there with you.
Love, Georgy

So, I wonder how long it will take her to notice this post about her. In the meantime, you should check out her bio on her website – she’s quite an interesting person.

Shrimp on the Barbie

These were some of the best shrimp I’ve ever eaten. Thomas used this recipe to marinade them. Basically soak a pound of shrimp in the following ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • pinch of parsley, finely chopped

We grilled extra shrimp to put with linguine tomorrow night. Yum.

Small Deer in our Backyard

One of the photo blogs I’ve been reading recently had a preference test in it. It showed the same photo edited in a couple of different ways – different contrasts, saturations, white balances… I found it very interesting and thought I’d try it with this photo of a deer we saw in our backyard this morning. I took the photo, and both Thomas and I took a couple cracks at editing it. I’m curious which style people prefer, and why.

Treasures from the Past

Thomas and I have been working on clearing out clutter, and today I found some really neat treasures. I found a little paper bag mixed in with my stuff that was filled with a few items that I’m guessing belonged to my great-grandmother.

Though I never met her, I do wear her wedding ring as my wedding ring, and have her china in my china cabinet. It may sound silly, but those two very important things make me feel close to her, so when I got to see what some more of her items were, it was really neat.

First, in the bag was her Bird and Fishing license from 1955. So I guess Grandpa’s love of fly-fishing was passed down. It states her age (65, that means she was born in 1887) and has some facts about what she looked like. Only 5’4? Maybe that’s where I got my short height from. I’m 5’6 and much shorter than the rest of my family. I like how she added in the S to make He into She.

Next, I found a pink hair net. I assume this was used to keep her hair neat when she slept. It’s very soft instead of the rough plastic feel I would have imagined.

And then there were some very cool handkerchiefs. If my parents don’t want these back, I will definately keep them, though I’m not sure what I’d do with them yet.

And finally, there was this item. I have no clue what it is – it’s soft mesh, and sewn in pleats on the sides, and stitched together in the middle. Any guesses?

What is this?
