It's Not If You Win or Lose

It’s not if you win or lose, it’s how much fun you’re having…at least this is what we said on Saturday, when we played kickball with Thomas’ company.

They lost 0 to 27. It was kind of like watching a team of just the kids who were picked last in P.E. No offense, they were all really nice people, but they need to stick to computers. :) And actually, there were a few good players, but they just couldn’t make up for the rest of us.

The league required that there has to be at least 4 girls on the field at all times, so I was roped into playing despite wearing blue jeans and sandles. Thomas was the cameraman-cheerleader on the sidelines. As you can see in the photo, I don’t have much kickball coordination.

If you want to see the rest of the photos, Thomas posted them on Picasa Web.

Fun Monday: Depths of my Refrigerator

I’m not doing too well with getting these Fun Mondays posted before Monday. Oh well, here’s my Fun Monday Night…This week, Amy at A Family Story asked to see our refrigerators. Mine shows that Thomas and I have started regressing back to the bachelor lifestyle. Honest, I used to cook before we moved to Atlanta.

So here’s the fridge – highlights include leftovers we will never eat, Thomas’ orange juice he drinks every morning, salad stuff that will go bad before we use it, and snack packs that will stay there until the expiration date when Thomas makes me throw them out finally.

Be sure to note the drawers at the bottom – I have labeled them here with their real contents.

And the freezer – highlights include a ton of wedding cake which was delicious on the wedding day (not sure how it is a few months past then), lots of biscuits that my Mom bought for Thanksgiving last year and the post-wedding brunch, ice packs, microwave pizza, and Jagermeister.

This is vegetarian bacon. You know, I once set off the fire alarm in my college dorm while cooking this stuff in the middle of the night.

This is the outside of the fridge. On it, you can see a handful of photos of our niece, a postcard with a VW Bus on it, our Save the Date postcard, a Weight Watcher calculator, various magnets (random Swedish word, a robot, a bus campout reminder, a shih tzu, the doc-in-a-box info, some roosters, and a wooden heart with my name. The ribbon at the bottom says “I support magnetic ribbons.” My Mother-in-law made me on the apron hanging on the door. Wow, I’ve never noticed the dent in the door before – I wonder how long it’s been there.

This is one of my favorite kitchen utensils – they’re little clips that hold the most used spices on the side of the fridge. Our most used spices are: Aromat (from Sweden), Chili Powder, Molly McButter, Red Pepper, Basil, Oragano, Mrs. Dash, and Garlic Powder.

And if you enjoyed this post, you should check out the one I made last year on my kitchen cupboards.

Big D

I commented to Thomas that I had the most American first name. He replied that even though it’s a US city, it had to come from somewhere. He guessed Native American or Hebrew — um, I don’t picture alot of Hebrew words being in early Texas history.

Anyway, we looked it up, and my name is Scottish, meaning “meadow valley”, or some similar variant depending on the site you check. It’s also a city in Scotland.

According to wikipedia, it’s a mystery how the Texas city got the name, but they suspect it was from Vice President George Dallas. My Mom got it from some model, I think.

According to name statistics, my first name is the #424 most common male name and the #2167 most common female name. Only 2550 other girls share my first name.

How common is your name? (Click on the name statistics link to check.)

Cleaning Burnt Pans

I just discovered a great cleaning trick today. I had burnt milk caked on the inside of a sauce pan (in case you’re reading this Mama C, don’t worry, it was not a pan you gave me). I tried soaking, scraping, and scrubbing with no luck, then I checked Google. The first trick I read worked great – boil dishwasher detergent for 20 minutes in water. It loosens the burnt cakey mess, and you can just wipe it away. Voila!

Geocache Aborted

Thomas and I took Clover on a geocache Sunday to test out my new GPS (my old one is somewhere in the Galapagos). It was at a nearby park, Leta Thompson Memorial Park, that we’ve never really checked out.  We discovered it had a great garden for macro shots near the front.

The geocache was not found. Halfway through the hike, Clover started wimpering. I could tell she was really hot, and since she never cries, we knew she must be miserable. We decided to abort and head home. It turns out that she had a hangnail that was bothering her.

Thomas and I took a bunch of photos however:

These were some of my favorites from the garden:
