Wildlife in the Backyard

I saw some wildlife in our backyard this weekend…

An Eastern box turtle was next to our deck. I think it was the same one I photographed a couple weeks ago – he was near the same spot.

A deer was down by the creek, though when he heard me, he took off.

Happy Father's Day

Last night, Thomas and I were sitting around talking about Great Dad Things. I thought I’d post some of my examples to celebrate Father’s Day…

Note: These all get the My Memories Disclaimer – this is how I remember them.

1. Guys weren’t allowed at Girl Scout camp, not even Dads. Though, during one of my trips to Girl Scout camp, my Dad camped at a campground up the river, and canoed in just to teach my troop how to set up campsites. I particularly remember learning to fold sleeping bags properly. Then he headed back out after the lesson.

2. When I needed homework help, I knew to go to Mom for Language Arts, and Dad for math. The problem is that Dad wouldn’t settle for the way we were being taught to solve math problems in our text book. Instead of looking up the proper formula, he’d try to teach me short cuts, or often how to derive the formula from scratch so I wouldn’t have to memorize it.

3. I had the coolest treehouse while I was growing up. It was as high as the roof of our house, it was big enough to hold my toy stove and a table with chairs, it had a roof on it so I was safe from sun and rain, and it was built with love and meticulous plans by my grandfather and Dad. I spent a lot of time playing house in it.

4. Dad has a great sense of humor and is always able to provide a horribly, cheesy joke, at random times. My all-time favorite, which we would use over and over, is: You’re pretty strong…but odor isn’t everything. And just so you know, Thomas laughs at the jokes just to kiss up.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad! Thank you for coaching my soccer and softball teams, fixing and upgrading my house, teaching me to ride a bike, and teaching me to drive my VW Bus. The photo in this entry is from our wedding – during the Father/Daughter dance.

P.S. The A/C is still broken, if you want to come down anytime soon, Dad. :) Just kidding…

Flowers from My Husband

Yesterday, I got flowers delivered to me at my office from my husband. No, not because he’s in trouble or did anything wrong – he was just being sweet because we’re just newlyweds. :) I decided to keep them there because they smell so nice, and I spend most of my day there anyway.

New Favorite Fabric Designer

I have a new favorite fabric designer – Marimekko. Sorry, Amy Butler and Heather Ross – you’ve been replaced. Luckily, all the Marimekko fabric is way out of my price range, so that keeps me from buying it. I have enough half-finished sewing projects as it is.

Here are some of my favorite patterns.

And these are beautiful enough in themselves that you could just frame the fabric as is.

And though I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of Japanese Import fabric, aren’t the storybook-themed fabrics (Big Bad Wolf, Three Bears) in this category the cutest? They would definitely go with my classic children’s books-themed nursery idea for when I have kids someday. I’m off to go surf (and drool on) the ReproDepot fabric website

Procrastinating

I remember when I was little that I would spend an entire day trying to clean my room. I never really got anywhere with it because I’d focus on the most unimportant parts – like organizing my marker box and testing to see which of my markers had dried up. I usually do much better now when trying to get something done, but today, I felt like I was organizing my marker box again. I really didn’t get much of anything done at all.

Here’s two ways I wasted time…

I bought some new makeup recently called Bare Minerals, yeah, it’s the stuff sold on late night infomercials, but I got it on Amazon.com. It’s supposed to make your face look really smooth. I gave it a try today for the first time. I’m not sure that it really made a difference, but it was quick and easy to apply. I’ll mess with it some more later.

Bare Minerals - Take 1

I held my camera out at arms length and spun around in my backyard. This was a huge waste of time, but at least the photo effect turned out neat. I’ll have to try more of these later. Uh, it’s for the sake of photography research. :)
